Weight loss / poor condition in horses and donkeys
Should I call the vet?
Typical signs: Ribs, spine or hip bones easier to see or feel; body condition score dropping over weeks.
Call your vet now if you see
- Losing weight while eating well
- Fever, diarrhea or swelling under the belly
- Not eating or dropping feed
- Rapid loss over days to a couple of weeks
- Older horse with a long curly coat, drinking and urinating more
What you can do
- Score body condition and weight-tape monthly; record it.
- Check teeth: dropped feed, slow eating, whole grain in the manure.
- Fecal egg count with your vet before deworming.
- Check how much hay each horse really gets; herd mates may push it away.
- Add forage before adding grain; make diet changes gradually.
When to call the vet
Within a week or two for a checkup and dental exam; sooner for any call-now sign.
