Lost shoe / hoof crack in horses and donkeys
Should I call the vet?
Typical signs: Shoe missing or loose, chipped hoof wall, or a crack running up the wall.
Call your vet now if you see
- A nail or clip went into the sole
- Lame
- Crack reaching the coronet, bleeding or oozing
- Heat, strong digital pulse or swelling
- Hoof wall torn away
What you can do
- Walk the pasture for the shoe and pick up any loose nails.
- Pick out the foot and check the sole for a nail hole.
- Protect the foot with a hoof boot or padded wrap; keep on soft footing.
- Call your farrier to reset; don't ride on rough ground until fixed.
- Keep a regular trim or shoeing schedule (often every 6–8 weeks; ask your farrier).
When to call the vet
Farrier within a day or two; vet same day if lame, bleeding, or a nail went into the sole.
